Closest to the house, opposite the church, and just 20 metres away is La Cueva. This is run by an English woman and her chef husband
who is Spanish. Try the tapas - many of which are a meal in themselves.
Hint - it is advisable book. We especially like the fresh fish dishes
and the paella.
Down by the town square is a small restaurant with a nice patio,
The Café des Artistes (formerly the Shamrock) - very pleasant in the evening for a beer. Good, cheap food with kids dishes.
Very relaxed - you can even order a Pizza from over the road
(wood fired and good) and eat at the table with a purchased drink.
Inside the pizza outlet - a genuine wood-fired pizza. They are delicious.
Les Palmiers, opposite the Cafe Des Artistes. Run by a Belgian couple, it has just been listed in the Michelin Guide (2007), it has some set menus (the weekday lunch menu is good value) and also a la carte.
Chez Claude – on your right as you enter
the village,
just up from the café des Artistes. This is a real local bar –
local wine from a carafe with chips (crisps) handed out
by Claude,
to keep you thirsty! Wonderful atmosphere, I don’t know how the new
non-smoking rules will affect bars like this.
Casa Lili - A tiny restaurant, living room size, with a small side terrace –
open in season. Home cooked food – no choice!!
Pop in early in the day and see
what's on the menu and then book if you like the sound of it. Situated 100m up
from Chez Claude
on the way to the house.
Le Catalan Bar -
Local bar and hostelry. 3 mins walk from
the house in the Place de Republic. Good beer - 1664 Heinekin - ask for 'seize cents'..
Other local eateries
A short drive away at Vives is a famous Catalan restaurant.
Eating here is like eating in an antique shop but the waiters
are friendly and the helpings are huge - be warned you need to fast
before you go! In the Michelin guide, reasonable prices.
Our favourite for a special treat is La Balette at Collioure.
This is very special with a lovely terrace overlooking the harbour.
A set menu is about 30 euros, the wine list is expensive but the service
is amazing, the food is delicious with little extras provided to
whet the mouth (amuse bouche). The set menu at lunch time during
the week is exceptionally good value - 23euros - with a couple of glasses
of wine thrown in.
Also at Collioure on the main beach (rue Jean Bart) is Restaurant Amphitryon
- specialities de la mer. Great for lunch -
you can sit outside and keep an
eye on your children on the beach.
The Salamander at Sorede, in the Michelin
Guide.
Chez Margot - Also in Sorede, reliable, good French food.
