Laroque-Des-Alberes
The Village and Region
Laroque is situated in the department of Pyrenees Orientales-also known as the Roussillon or French Catalonia. It shares its roots with Spanish Catalonia and Catalan is spoken by 25%of the local population and is taught in schools. You will notice that the road signs are in French and Catalan and the Catalan colours of yellow and red (gold and blood) are very prevalent. The mountain peak that you can see from all around is Canigou- the sacred mountain of the Catalans.
During the summer months especially during local fetes you will see people dance the Sardagne which is very special to the Catalan people and because of this was banned by Franco during his time in power.
This region has everything you could wish for in a holiday destination-history,art,beaches,mountains,gorges,vineyards and its own cuisine. So there is scope for most leisure pursuits especially walking, cycling, swimming etc
The village is a living village with a permanent population and several shops including two bakeries, a butcher, newsagents, a pharmacy and a small "superette". The supermarket is five minutes drive away, there is also a weekly market which has recently become bigger and a visiting "fish van". The oldest part of the village dates back to medieval times and the "Tour" and its fortifications have been lovingly restored. There are also several cafes/restaurants in the village.
